A site for all of you who are passionate about children learning art.
ABOUT MEArt teacherI was a primary school teacher for 25 years. For an additional twelve years I was a specialised art teacher of children aged 5 to 10 years.
I have a Diploma of Teaching, Display and Advertising Certificate and a Diploma of Creativity. I have adult children and a partner of more years than I can believe. Together we have lived in England and Germany but home has always been New Zealand. I am happiest making things; paintings, prints, encaustics, garments, knitwear and so on.. |

Overview
I think art experiences are about the journey. They can be enjoyable, confronting, relaxing and challenging. Who knows what children will learn, master, enjoy or be frustrated by? Without putting it out there they’ll remain unknown. The art making environment should begin with a reasonable amount of order… materials prepared, spaces organised etc. It probably won’t end in great order. When we use a space full of things to create with, it will quickly turn into a mess. A few rules about appropriate use of materials and the space, are for everyone's benefit. |
I've noticed that visual art is a subject that is often overlooked by classroom teachers dealing with extremely full curricula. There is pressure from parents, peers, and themselves to make sure children's art looks good. Teachers may be overwhelmed by the materials, processes and art skills they need, and by the appropriateness of lessons they attempt. I have tried each lesson several times with different age levels and abilities. I had a blog with every lesson explained, until Blogger dropped all the images when I changed my gmail address. Sad. |
Pinterest is a fantastic place for art teachers. But keep these things in mind;; originality, creativity, ownership.
If everyones art looks the same, the children have not been given enough freedom to explore and grow as young artists.
